ONE OF the more distinctive projects for Mental Health Week that has come to our attention is surely the screenings of Kaye Harrison’s  film “The Sunnyboy,” to be held this week at Palace Electric Cinemas.

Over two  years in the making, the  follows Jeremy Oxley, front man of the much-lauded 80’s band the Sunnyboys, as he emerges from a 30-year battle with schizophrenia.

Only recently stabilised with medication and secure in a loving environment, Jeremy unpicks the confused thoughts and feelings he has about his painful past on screen. It’s told largely from his own perspective as “The Sunnyboy”  follows him  as his confidence and wellbeing slowly grows and he dares to contemplate a return to the stage.

“The Sunnyboy” premièred in June at the Sydney Opera House for the Vivid Festival (in partnership with the Sydney Film Festival). The film received a standing ovation from the sell out 1300 audience.

The film  now has a national cinema release with Palace Cinemas, where each screening will be followed by a Q&A with Peter Oxley (Sunnyboys, Jeremy’s brother) and director Kaye Harrison.
