Music award heads North in music’s big night

ONE of Canberra most successful musical exports, the vocal ensemble The Idea of North, was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the MAMAs – MusicACT Annual Music Awards, held in Albert Hall on Saturday.

Inducted before a packed house of music-industry practitioners and fans attending the second MAMAs, the world-famous a cappella group, founded in Canberra in 1993, also joined a huge line-up of ACT musical talent in playing to the crowd.

The opening showstopper, “Music is My Religion,” was a mixture of hip-hop, dance, physical and musical theatre staged by artistic director Chenoeh Miller, but as the night wore on, no fewer than 10 separate musical s across the genres were interspersed among the nine “rounds” of the awards that just keep coming kept coming.

In the independently-judged categories, the 2013 winners were:

Best Folk Artist, Xavier Dunn; Best Heavy Artist (Punk, Hardcore, Metal), Revellers; Best Cover Band, Party Gravy; Best House, Electro or Techno Producer, The Aston Shuffle and Ashley Feraude; Best Indie or Alternative Artist, Safia; Best Jazz Artist, Liam Budge; Best Pop Artist, Amber Nichols; Best Psychedelic Electronic Music Producer, Disect; Best Bass Music Producer, Ben Colin; Best Blues, Roots or World Artist, Guyy Lilleyman; Best Choral or Vocal Artist, Aphir; Best Classical Solo or Ensemble Artist, Adam Cook; Best Concert, Brass or Big Band, Canberra City Band; Best Rock Artist, Super Best Friends and Elisha Bones; Contribution to the Music Industry, Jim Cotter and Frank Madrid; Best Studio, Engineer or Producer, Dax Liniere; Hall of Fame Inductee, The Idea of North; Best Urban Artist, Big Dave; Song of The Year, Fun Machine – “Ready For The Fight” and Best Live Youth Band, The Steptones.

Winners in the public categories, decided on the night, were Best Artist, Fun Machine; Best Live Performer, Dylan Hekimian; Best Youth Artist, Dylan Hekimian and Best Live Music Venue, Zierholz@UC.
