Opposition to push for 5th judge

ACT Shadow Attorney-General Zed Seselja will introduce legislation on Wednesday for the appointment of a fifth judge to the Supreme Court, to address what he calls “massive delays” in the ACT legal system.

Mr Seselja says The ACT Law Society wrote to the ACT Government and the Opposition in April calling for the appointment of a fifth judge.

“For hundreds of Canberrans their lives are turned upside down while they wait for the long-delayed results of court cases,” Mr Seselja says.

“There are also significant costs to local businesses when judgements are delayed for years. We should be taking immediate action to legislate the appointment of a fifth Supreme Court judge to ensure that justice for them is not delayed.

“This simple change of amending the Supreme Court Act will assist the current Supreme Court judges to alleviate their heavy case load and reduce the significant delays which impact unjustly on the accused and victims, as well as civil judgements.”

The Supreme Court (Appointment of Resident Judges) Amendment Bill will ensure that at least five judges, including the Chief Justice, will be appointed by the Executive.
