Police say bag snatch story ‘made up’

A woman has fabricated a robbery and been arrested for public mischief in Holt, according to police.

The 39-year-old reported to police that a man had stolen her handbag and run away with it, whilst she was walking down Starke Street.

A number of police cars responded to the incident, as well as a K-9 unit from the Specialist Response Group, but after making some enquiries, the responding officers decided she “had made the whole thing up”.

Superintendent of the North District, Brett Kidner was frustrated at the woman tying up police resources.

“It is concerning that some people show no consideration for wasting police resources, in this instance over three hours. The commitment of these resources to this task meant they were not avaliable to respond to other emergencies.”

If she is found guilty of the offence, she could be charged up to $2000 and/or imprisonment for up to one year.

The woman will attend the ACT Magistrates court at a later date.
