Review: Deep, meaningful but unfinished

OVER more than a decade Version 1.0 has presented some of the most innovative and exciting theatre seen in Australia.

It uses a form of “verbatim theatre” where most of the dialogue is the actual words spoken by real people and recorded in the media or elsewhere on the public record.

Its work touches on big themes linked into highly theatrical and polished stage presentation. This work was no exception; though unfortunately, it lacked some of the depth and intensity of previous productions.

With a clever and effective design, the staging and quality of the performance was very high.

The subject of sex, politics and public aspiration was certainly topical. However, only a few of the scenes went into deeper analytical territory and there was a sense of the piece being unfinished.

Nothing was resolved nor was it particularly challenging. Perhaps this is a limitation of the style, though Version 1.0 has become very skilled at providing theatrical imagery and juxtapositions to draw out contradictory aspects of political and social statements. This was achieved in one scene dealing with a debate between Fiona Patten and a member of Family First.

That said, anyone with an interest in contemporary and topical political issues will find the production on topic and worth a look.
