Revisiting Black Mountain

A UNIQUE exhibition focusing on the “photoecology” of Black Mountain is opening at the CSIRO Discovery Centre tonight, the result of a course run by David Wong and Chris Holly, who took 7 photographers to the site over a year to explore the beauty and ecology of “little Black Mountain.”

Ian Fraser, a Canberra naturalist, conservationist, author, ABC broadcaster, natural history tour guide, environmental consultant and adult educator will open the show today, Monday, June 17 at 6pm at CSIRO Discovery Centre.

Mike Paterson, one of the photoecologists said, “it was fascinating to ‘repeat’ visit this very small unassuming patch of bush, surrounded by busy roads, a powerline and a switch yard in the middle of a town and find such a variety of flora and fauna – how many people walk, run, ride and drive through/past this every day and never see a thing?”

You might not have heard of photoecology, but the idea is that it encourages people to explore and appreciate nature through photography and collaborating to document and share the ecology of a particular location.

Now in its second year, the course is funded through the Australian Government’s “Inspiring Australia” program and run in association with the CSIRO Discovery Centre.

‘Photoecology’, until Sunday, June 23, at CSIRO Discovery Centre, North Science Road, Acton.
