Seekers hand over painting to gallery

LEGENDARY music group The Seekers were at the The National Portrait Gallery today to officially hand over a portrait to the gallery, titled “The Seekers Reunite 50 Years On.”

The Seekers – Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley – attended the unveiling with the artist, Helen Edwards, to celebrate this addition to the national collection, painted in 2011.

The Seekers were the first Australian pop music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the UK and the US, with songs such as with “I’ll Never Find Another You”, “A World of Our Own”, “Morningtown Ride”, “Someday, One Day”, “Georgy Girl” and “The Carnival Is Over”, which is still in the top 50 best-selling singles in the UK.

In 1968, they were named as joint Australians of the Year – the only group thus honoured.

“The Seekers Reunite 50 Years On” (2011) painted by Helen Edwards, synthetic polymer paint on linen. A gift of Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley 2012. Donated through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program
