AS Canberra recovers from strong winds and a heavy downpour, the ACT State Emergency Service (SES) kicked off its StormSafe campaign today at Floriade with Police and Emergency Services Minister Simon Corbell there to do the honours.

Mr Corbell said the theme of this year’s campain was “Weather the Storm – Be ready. Plan Ahead”.

“The message will be used to increase community awareness of the storm season, and to encourage people to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their property,” Mr Corbell said.

“Last financial year, the ACT SES received 1647 calls for help for storm and flood assistance.”

Five simple precautions people can take to prepare their properties this storm season include:

  • Clearing gutters of leaves and debris
  • Trimming overhanging tree branches
  • Securing loose outdoor furniture
  • Repairing any roof damage; and,
  • Moving cars under cover or away from trees during storms

Mr Corbell also advised Canberrans to check that their insurance policies are current.
