FORMER Canberra Liberals leader Zed Seselja has announced he will resign from the ACT Legislative Assembly next Tuesday June 11.
Mr Seselja will make a valedictory speech in the Assembly this Thursday, which will be his last sitting day.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Canberra whom I have represented for 8½ years, and who I fought for as Opposition leader,” said Mr Seselja.
“l hope to continue to represent and fight for them in the Senate. I look forward to spending time out in the community talking to Canberrans about the issues that matter to them and their families.”
Mr Seselja won a preselection battle with incumbent Senator for the ACT Gary Humphries earlier this year.
Over the coming months, he will divide his time between consulting with Canberra firm Landscape Research+Communications and campaigning for the September 14 election.
In the next few weeks a countback will be conducted from candidates who unsuccessfully ran in the electorate of Brindabella at the last election, to determine Mr Seselja’s replacement. It is expected there will be a replacement announced in time for the August sittings of the Assembly.
