Southern Cross tops clubs awards

THE Southern Cross Club Woden is the ACT’s Club of the Year.

It won the major award at Friday night’s 2013 ClubsACT Awards for Excellence, before 450 people at the Hellenic Club Woden.

There were 24 awards made to the club industry’s outstanding performers.

Jeff House ClubsACT Chief Executive congratulated the 2013 winners, saying: “The Vikings clubs took awards in six categories including Promotion of Sport, Community Assistance and Club of the Year (Medium). The awards are a reflection of their great business acumen and commitment to the Canberra community.

“Having just passed its 40th year, the Southern Cross Club also took out multiple awards including a major award in Large Club of the Year.

“Punters new and old won’t be disappointed by impressive renovations to the sports bar and TAB at the Hellenic Club Woden. Aiming to maximising landmark events and providing a comfortable modern sports bar experience, the club easily secured the Best Club ACTTAB award.”

CEO of the National Press Club, Maurice Reilly, was awarded the Chief Minister’s Commendation, which recognises outstanding and long-term service to the club industry.

“Maurice has been a leading figure in the Canberra club industry for many years having served as board member of ClubsACT for five years and as Chief Executive of the Press Club since 2004. He is a worthy recipient of the Chief Minister’s commendation,” Mr House said.

The Awards also saw a new competition in the ACTTAB Chefs Battle, enabling talented chefs in clubs to test their culinary skills.
