Speed cameras to be examined

THE ACT Government’s road safety camera program will be evaluated to assess how effective Canberra’s road safety cameras are at reducing speeding and accidents, the ACT government announced today.

ACT attorney general Simon Corbell says the camera program has evolved over more than a decade and now includes mobile, red light and speed, fixed speed only and point to point cameras.

“With a decade of operation now established, it is appropriate to evaluate the performance of the program as a whole,” he says.

“An evaluation of the program will assist the Government to identify any opportunities to gain improved road safety effectiveness from the existing program and help ensure that any future changes are as well informed as possible. The evaluation will look at the impact of the road safety camera program as well as the governance of the program.”

Evaluation of the ACT’s road safety camera program would be undertaken by an independent specialist in road safety programs, and proposals will be sought by the end of 2013 for an evaluation to be undertaken in the first half of 2014.

“ACT Policing reports show that speeding was identified as a contributing factor in 16 of the 59 (27.1 per cent) fatal crashes which occurred between 2008 and 2012. This is similar to experience interstate, with national road crash data showing that speed is the main causal factor in around 30 per cent of fatal crashes,” Mr Corbell says.
