STRAIGHT from Belgium comes “Richard, Professor of Literature,” a one man show featuring Belgian comedian and puppeteer Stéphane Georis in a script by Francy Begasse, who also directs.
Over three episodes, “the professor” brings us characters from “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet” and “Richard III” through delicious puppets and bizarre objects that become magical.
“Hamlet,” for instance, is told with croquettes of fish, “Romeo and Juliet” is told with clothes the puppeteer wears and so that Capulet becomes his shirt, his jacket is Montagu, and his shoe Friar Lawrence. “Richard III” is told with a pork roast, cut into small pieces, forming the characters.
No wonder Georis is seen as “literally and metaphorically” disassembling Shakespeare’s portrait of humanity.
“Richard, Professor of Literature,” at The Street Theatre, April 4-7, bookings to 6247 1223 or www.thestreet.org.au
