‘The edge of the world’ in art

“CITYNEWS” has been telling readers for a year or so now about Michael Cammack’s very intimate Kaori Gallery, part of his premises at Canberra City Framing in Hobart Place. DSCN0814

Now he’s hosting a new tapestry exhibition by local artist Brenda Goggs, and she couldn’t be more pleased, saying “Thank goodness for young artist businessman, Michael Cammack at Canberra City Framing. He’s made over half his premises to show the work of Canberra artists. Bravo Michael!”

In this exhibition, “At the round earth’s imagined corners”, Goggs continues to explore ideas to do with the Australia and our place in it. “If one has ever wondered what is at the edge of the world, at the earth’s imagined corners, here it is”, she says.

“From an Australian point of view, what would we expect to see? Windows on mystery, a sandy shore? Drowned gum trees? Or exotic plants? Above each image is a holy bird, a bird imbued with the same spirit as the dove in a Renaissance painting. Here we see a magpie with attitude, a seagull, an albatross and a Diamond Firetail finch, each with a divine energy.”

Cammack is an ANU School of Art Wood Workshop graduate who is now giving Canberra artists the opportunity to reveal small exhibitions in detail, for slow looking. The gallery, he says, is perfectly located for a lunch time browse of local artwork, and in this case, a glimpse of something eternal in the middle every day life in Canberra in business hours!
