THE works in “Enclosures,” Beverley Thomas’s exhibition opening today at Belconnen Arts Centre, were created in response to the artist’s trip to South Korea for the 2012 Korean Bojagi Forum, the first international conference held on all aspects of ‘Bojagi’, the traditional Korean folk art of making wrapping cloths as a form of self-expression.
“I am third generation Australian, and whilst I have very little history of my family, genetically I have gone down the path of expressing my love for textiles through my embroideries and colours, which is parallel to my sisters in many other countries and cultures,” the artist says.
Thomas was Artist in Residence at Calvary Hospital in 2010-2011, during which time she wove textile panels, measuring three meters by 80 centimetres, to hang in the Intensive Care waiting room.
