Unemployment rate climbs to 5.7 per cent

AUSTRALIA’S unemployment rate has climbed to 5.7 per cent, official figures show. 

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates reveal the rate increased from an upwardly revised 5.6 per cent in May, to 5.7 per cent in June. May’s figure was revised up from 5.5 per cent.

The number of people unemployed increased by 23,700 people to 709,300 in June.

The unemployment rate is now at its highest level since September 2009.
