MOVIE mogul Harvey Weinstein has cancelled his much-publicised visit to Canberra, just days ahead of a planned celebration of his life’s work this weekend.

Weinstein said in a statement that doctors had forbidden him to take the long flight from the US because of a knee injury.

Hundreds of people had bought tickets to the series of events around Canberra this weekend, including a masterclass with Weinstein and an in-depth conversation about his life as a Hollywood producer.

The main event was to be a gala ball at Parliament House this Saturday night, for which attendees had paid $440 a head to dine and see actor Geoffrey Rush present Weinstein with the inaugural Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International Fellowship.

There is no indication as to whether Weinstein’s visit would be rescheduled.

However, the premiere screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom – the film personally chosen by Weinstein for its Australian premier in Canberra, will still take place at 4.45pm on Sunday November 24 at Palace Electric Cinemas, as scheduled.

Full refunds will be offered to all ticket holders.  Ticket refund enquiries should be directed to the organisers at 02 6195 0831 orkatherine@bdwspecialevents.com.au
