Wet weather prompts warning to drivers

TERRITORY and Municipal Services are warning Canberra drivers to exercise caution, particularly on rural roads, due to wet weather and snow.

The following roads are currently closed:

• Boboyan Road (4WD access only)

• Corin Dam Road closed at the Square Rock car park

• Mount Franklin Road at the Mount Franklin Chalet car park

• Angle Crossing.

Residents wanting to experience the snow first-hand are encouraged to consider visiting an established snow recreation area, such as Corin Forest, rather than informal areas accessed by Brindabella Road and Boboyan Road.

“Many locals will want to visit the snow during the week and on the weekend, unfortunately our unsealed rural roads aren’t designed to take the large volumes of traffic during the snow season. The Corin Forest mountain recreation area is the best and safest opportunity for Canberrans to enjoy the snow here in the ACT,” says National Parks and Catchments manager Brett McNamara.

“I also remind motorists that a sudden change in weather may result in heavy rain, sleet or snow that could make some roads unpassable. Please avoid travel on rural roads in these conditions where possible. If Canberrans do travel to the snow they are encouraged to prepare by ensuring they have appropriate clothing, food, water and medical supplies should they get caught in inclement weather.

“Many rural areas west of the Murrumbidgee River Corridor have little or no mobile phone coverage. It is important that motorists let family and friends know exactly where they are going and when they will return. This type of information can greatly assist the coordination of a search in the event of an emergency. For experienced visitors heading further into Namadgi, emergency beacons are available for hire from the Namadgi Visitor’s Centre.”
