214 busted over the holiday weekends

ACT Policing issued over 214 Traffic Infringement Notices and 98 Cautions while targeting dangerous drivers over the Community Day and Labour Day long weekends.

This targeting was part of a joint ACT Policing and NSW Police operation over both long weekends, which often see a large number of motorists travelling interstate. Double demerits were in effect over the Labour Day weekend.

Traffic Operations Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said that considering the large number of motorists on the road, it was fortunate that the long weekend periods saw no serious or fatal collisions.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and the majority of motorists clearly understand that message. It’s unfortunate for all road users that there are some people who continue to take risks on our roads,” A/Superintendent Anderson said.

On Monday afternoon (October 6), ACT Policing caught a 23 year-old Downer woman travelling 33 km/h over the speed limit at 113km/h in an 80km/h zone on Barton Highway, Nicholls. The driver held a probationary driver’s licence and was issued a Traffic Infringement Notice with a penalty of $664 and eight demerit points.

ACT Policing also conducted a total of 4,121 roadside breath tests, with 25 positive results, and 50 roadside drug tests, with 14 possible positive results (yet to be confirmed by a laboratory test) across the eight days of the two long weekends.

The ACT road toll for 2014 currently sits at nine.
