ANU students maintaining the rage

MORE than 100 ANU Students continued their creative campaign against university decision-makers who support the Federal Government’s proposal to cut university funding, increase HECS-HELP interest rates and deregulate course fees.

ANU students covered the walls of the Chancelry with ‘IOUs’ and messages to voice their concern about the significantly increased HECS-HELP debts which will follow the changes outlined in the May budget. Four security guards kept watch and Ian Young made a personal appearance as did Stephen Darwin from the NTEU.

Students are deeply frustrated by Vice-Chancellor Ian Young, Chancellor Gareth Evans and the University Council’s unanimous support for the deregulation of fees.

“I’m so pleased that so many braved the cold during exam period to participate in this action,” said protest organiser and ANU Student Scott Walker.

UPDATE: The ANU Students Association has asked for it to be noted they oppose the fee rise.

University Council support of fee deregulation was not unanimous. The ANUSA President, Cameron Wilson, is a member of the council and we can assure you that Cam and others are not in support of fee deregulation.
