An Asbestos Industry Forum for Canberra has been formed

THE ACT Asbestos Industry Forum came into being yesterday at a meeting of ACT licensed asbestos removalists and asbestos assessors.

The purpose of the forum is to monitor Government legislative changes effecting the management of asbestos in the ACT.

The ACT Chief Minister and the ACT Government Asbestos Response Taskforce has previously given assurances that standards of asbestos regulation for the ACT would not be degraded in any way. However the Forum is concerned that despite regulatory changes and new legislation understood to be introduced into the ACT Legislative Assembly this week, the ACT asbestos industry has had no opportunity to examine or comment on this legislation

The new Chair of the forum, Frank Poole, says “the ACT asbestos industry saw the necessity for a consolidated asbestos industry voice to advise ACT Government and departments. This advice would focus on ensuring that there is no degradation of ACT asbestos management standards and to ensure licensing standards were adequate and enforceable. ”

The ACT Asbestos Industry Forum looks forward to working with the ACT Government to ensure that the current high standards of asbestos management remain in place.
