Celtic Thunder fills Donaldson’s shoes

THE untimely death in March of George Donaldson, lead singer of the Irish supergroup Celtic Thunder, has left a big gap, but the group has moved quickly to ensure that their biggest and most spectacular Australian tour, “Mythology,” goes ahead, now dedicated to his memory.

Billed as “Celtic Thunder’s most extravagant and spectacular show to date,” the production moves, musically, through the history of the Celtic people, looking back at the heritage and influences of this community.

Emmet Cahill, who left the show in December to pursue a solo career, has rescheduled other commitments to join the tour Australia with the other group members, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the death of not only a colleague but a friend and felt that it was only right to re-join the guys on this momentous occasion, paying homage to a wonderful man.”

The “Mythology” DVD went immediately to Number One on the ARIA chart and remained on the chart for 25 weeks. A new DVD and CD package titled “My Land,” has now been released exclusively in Australia. It’s an hour-long journey alongside the members of Celtic Thunder as they bring you to their favourite places in Ireland and Scotland, chat about growing up Celtic and about making the “Mythology” show. It features footage and interviews with George Donaldson at his home in Scotland, and in Ireland interacting with the rest of the group and even has a Celtic Thunder version of “Waltzing Matilda”.

Celtic Thunder’s “Mythology,”  at the Royal Theatre, Saturday May 31, ticketek.com.au or 132 849.
