Church speaks out about child abuse hearings

The Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn has issued a statement about the planned hearings on June 10 by the Royal Commission into Child Abuse.

“This latest hearing will again bring into sharp focus the past failing of Catholic Church organisations in dealing with child sexual abuse,” Truth Justice and Healing Council CEO Francis Sullivan said.

“What will also be heard is the major changes that have taken place in schools and other institutions over the past 20 years that have improved markedly on the way survivors of abuse have been treated and child protection is undertaken.”

These words would be more reassuring if they didn’t so eerily mirror the assurances of the church that nothing untoward was going on in the late 80s and early 90s.
