Constitution Avenue makeover kicks off

SHANE Rattenbury has launched new works to transform Constitution Avenue into a shared zone of bicycle and bus lanes with $42 million in Commonwealth funding as a Centenary gift.

“The Constitution Avenue upgrade, between Vernon Circle and Anzac Parade, will provide major public transport, active transport and landscape improvements for the community,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“The upgrade supports the ACT Government’s commitment to urban renewal and will help deliver a vibrant, well designed public open space and a sustainable and integrated transport network through the city.

“We are moving away from the notion that Constitution Avenue is primarily a transport corridor for cars and toward a shared space for people to enjoy. A dedicated bus lane and bus priority at intersections, segregated cycle lane and wide pedestrian zones will help promote sustainable transport along the avenue. The final design plans also allow for the integration of light rail in the future.”

Work will start with a tree replacement program.
