Dan Lorrimer: making steel behave like paper

CANBERRA artist and designer, Dan Lorrimer, has a fascinating solo exhibition of sculptures opening tomorrow in which he makes steel behave like paper.

Dan Lorrimer Fragment

In “Fragment,” Lorrimer repeatedly folds, cuts and works sheet metal until it looks like a piece of paper that has been through the same treatment (“minus the hydraulic pressure, obviously,” he says).

Noting that steel and paper are “pretty different materials”, he has found that under hydraulic pressure, the sheet metal begins to stress, crumple, tear and finally fragment.

Dan Lorrimer 2The result is a suite of sculptures with the simple sense of fragility of paper yet at the same time the solidity and strength of the metal.

Lorrimer’s knowledge and manipulation of his materials allow him to explore new possibilities of form, and create sculptures that ANCA Gallery calculates will astonish and delight.

“Fragment,” Dan Lorrimer at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place Dickson, 12-5pm Wednesday to Sunday, September 10-28. Opening event from 6pm tomorrow, Wednesday, September 10 – all welcome.
