CANBERRA families will enjoy films created by and about people with disability, at the ACT Disability and Community Services Commissioner’s Film Festival, to be held from 6pm at the National Film and Sound Archive tomorrow, Wednesday, December 3.

The free event is hosted by Disability Services Commissioner Mary Durkin each year, and is a key part of local celebrations for the United Nations International Day of People with Disability.

“I feel privileged in my role, to have the opportunity to help showcase the good work of very talented people of all abilities, at events like this one,” Durkin said, adding that around 16 per cent of the ACT population lived with some sort of disability, meaning that going out to enjoy a film or She said it was an opportunity for people from all walks of life to get together and enjoy free entertainment and served as a catalyst to increase awareness of the challenges people with disability can face, and the importance of accessibility and inclusiveness in our everyday activities.

The festival is held every second year in partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive, and features Auslan interpretation as well as captioning and audio description of all films.
