Glass miniatures for connoisseurs

“CITYNEWS” popped in yesterday for a quick preview of Bilk Gallery’s likely-to-be-popular ‘miniature’ glass exhibition, opening tomorrow evening, April 16, with a celebration from 6 to 8 PM to which everyone is invited.

This year, five of Australia and New Zealand’s most internationally recognised glass artists, Evelyn Dunstan (NZ), Tevita Havea, Jenni Kemarre Martiniello, Kirstie Rea, and Ben Sewell,  have created exquisite miniatures of their larger works specifically for Bilk Gallery.

While we were there, Kirstie Rea arrived with what looked to be her lunch wrapped in little parcels, but which turned out to be exquisite ‘parcels’ of brilliantly-coloured glass, ‘folded’ in layers. In the window. You can see the larger original on which she had based her miniatures.

It’s been curated by Lisa Cahill, who says that the artists have produced skilfully scaled down works that “are equal parts beautiful, delicate and evocative.”

Cahill says, “Working on a smaller scale than is familiar, can be quite challenging and at times can take as long or longer than the artist’s already established practice, however it can also be quite enjoyable. These five artists have generously agreed to work outside their comfort zone to create miniatures specifically for this exhibition.”

The excitement around the Gallery in Manuka was palpable as Bilk’s Glass Miniature exhibition has historically been a highlight on the calendar, providing, as they point out, an excellent entry point for first time-collectors in one of our pricier and most prestigious art markets.

Glass Miniatures Exhibition 2014, at Bilk Gallery for contemporary metal and glass, Palmerston Lane, Manuka, April 16 to May 31. Opening, 6pm tomorrow. All welcome.
