The National Trust has new initiatives for the ACT

THE National Trust (ACT) has today launched two initiatives to recognise and promote our heritage.

The first, “This Place Matters”, invites Canberrans to nominate heritage places that are important to them.

In launching the program Eric Martin, spokesman for the National Trust (ACT), said “The Trust is asking the community to help us identify the places that matter to them. They can be places under threat, places with strong personal attachment or places considered important to the wider community.”

“The places identified as mattering to the community will be used by the National Trust (ACT) to identify and protect our heritage, expand our understanding of their social significance and to reinforce the already strong value the community places on our heritage.”

“You can upload a photo and a short description of the place onto the website or send them into the National Trust (ACT).”

“We are also launching the ACT National Trust’s first ever ACT Heritage Awards as a way of further celebrating our heritage and the work done to preserve and protect it,” Mr Martin said.

“The awards are a positive way of recognising and promoting best practice heritage action in the Capital,” he said.

“The awards will cover all aspects of heritage including archaeological, indigenous, built and objects and will consider large and small projects, conservation and adaptive re-use, intangible and tangible heritage, built projects and reports.”

Nominations for the Heritage Awards are open for projects completed in the last three years in the Territory and will close on 30 June 2014.

Entries will be reviewed by a specialist panel who will award certificates and plaques to the winners, who will also receive recognition through the National Trust networks.
