‘Odd’ Queanbeyan moments highlighted in festival

WITH the focus on “some of the city’s stranger mysteries”, Queanbeyan’s Heritage Festival kicks off today.

The popular “Mysterious Queanbeyan by Moonlight” tours, “tales of the unexplained and the unusual, the macabre and the extraordinary” will be related—in the cemetery.

Then there’s a chance to dress up in period costume and perambulate around Queanbeyan Park on Sunday April 6 while serenaded by poet and musician John Warner. “We’d love to see people come along and stroll around the park as was the custom many years ago,” says Queanbeyan’s manager of Library and Cultural Services, Peter Conlon.

Throughout the festival, the Library will be exhibiting historic photos of Queanbeyan streets and houses, then on April 12 the Queanbeyan Museum and the Printing Museum will both hold open days hold their open day.

A highlight will be announcement on April 12 at Queanbeyan Museum of this year’s winners of Queanbeyan’s Heritage Awards.

On Sunday April 12, Queanbeyan’s remnant bushland will be on show during a walk in Bicentennial Park.

“Queanbeyan is old by Australian standards, and over the course of 175 years there have been more uncommon and unexplained events and activities than people might think,” Conlon says, “I’m told there can be some odd moments along the tour, and guests have included local amateur ghost hunters and those interested in the paranormal who claim to have had some strange experiences.”

Highlights of the festival are:

  • Picnic in the Past – A tour of historic Queanbeyan Park. Bring a picnic. From 10.30am Sunday April 6
  • Council’s Heritage Awards – announced by Mayor Tim Overall Queanbeyan Museum, noon, Saturday April 12
  • “On the street where you live — then and now”. A display of historic photos of Queanbeyan streets and houses – Queanbeyan Library, April 3-30.
  • Museum Open Day – Farrer Place – The Queanbeyan Museum will launch its new exhibition, “Post Haste”, on the history of local postal services – 11am – 4pm Saturday, April 12
  • Queanbeyan Printing Museum Open Day – 1 – 4pm Saturday, April 12
  • “A Bush Journey” – 10am Sunday, April 13. Top end of Gilmore Place Explore Queanbeyan’s original remnant bushland in Bicentennial Park. Bring a picnic in a back pack for after the walk. Wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes and a hat and sunscreen, camera and binoculars.
  • “Mysterious Queanbeyan by Moonlight” – Visit one of the oldest cemeteries in the region. Friday April 11, Thursday, April 17, Saturday, May 3.  Bookings essential to 0413 671 123.
