ACT Policing is urging Canberra drivers to stay safe over the Community Day long weekend, when police will be conducting high-visibility patrols.

Traffic Operations Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said with large numbers of motorists travelling in and out of Canberra over the long weekend, drivers are reminded to obey speed limits, take regular breaks and be patient and alert when driving in heavy traffic conditions.

“All motorists driving, either in the ACT or interstate, need to pay attention to the warnings put in place to ensure that they have a safe journey on the roads,” A/Superintendent Anderson said.

“We want to make sure the Canberra community can enjoy its well-earned break without the tragedy of road trauma.”

“Remember to keep our roads safe by not drinking and driving and staying within the speed limit at all times. Make sure you fasten your seatbelt and remember it is your responsibility to ensure that all occupants of your vehicle are wearing their seatbelts too.”

“To those in the Community travelling interstate, ensure you are well rested before embarking on a long journey and never drive when you are tired and fatigued. Also, it is advisable to take regular rest breaks every two hours when travelling extended distances.”

The community is also reminded that over the Labour Day long weekend double demerits will apply for speeding and seatbelt offences, with an extra point for all other traffic offences, beginning the first moment on Friday, October 3 through to the last moment on Monday, October 6 inclusive.

The ACT road toll for 2014 currently sits at nine.
