Would you prefer a seat on a tram or an Audi convertible?

ALISTAIR Coe says that for the same price as light rail, the ACT Labor government could buy an Audi A3 convertible for every household in Gungahlin. It would also be $4 million cheaper to operate and maintain all of those vehicles, rather than operate light rail, he said.

“The cost of light rail for Canberra taxpayers is incredibly high and this comparison with the Audi A3 demonstrates that,” Mr Coe said.

    Cost per Audi A3 = $47,300 × 18,000 (Number of homes in Gungahlin) = $851,400,000.

“It is important to put the amount of money the government is squandering on light rail into perspective.

“The fact that the same amount of money could purchase so many cars puts into perspective the enormity of the light rail project.

“The new Chief Minister’s recommitment to light rail is bad news for Canberra. Only the Canberra Liberals will stop this ill-conceived project,” Mr Coe concluded.

I can’t believe that this sort of mentality still exists at at time when Canberra’s roads are getting more clogged every day. I can see some of his point but it was a very bad analogy. I wonder if we could work out how many swinging votes Mr Coe has just lost.

What about traffic jam? What about the need for more roads as a consequence? What about greenhouse emmissions? Making this sort of comparisons…is exactly why I DON’T vote Liberals.

This has to be the most stupid argument I have heard against the light rail. Addressing congestion by adding more cars to the road.. Typical capitalist, corporate loving, visionless liberal. He should apply for a job at the daily telegraph… Stupid..

How will an Audi help parents drop their children to school on time, or help a dad trying to get from job to job, or help an ambulance get through traffic in an emergency. This is absolutely terrible politics, a new low rom Coe.

It’s ridicule people! The point being made is clearly this project is a significant initial investment, with significant ongoing cost to derive less than a third of our current population. At a time when the Federal Government is downsizing the key employment market for Canberra! The Tram is an ideological objective of the greens, much in the manner of smaller Government ideology of the Liberals.
