Review / Fitting finale for glass prize

THIS, the 20th and last Ranamok Glass Prize, is a fitting finale to his prestigious exhibition.

RGP14_KathrynWightman_Carpet-373x500The exhibition includes a good spread of senior practising artists as well as those whose careers are not so advanced.
Through its prism we see the extraordinary richness and diversity of glass art in our region.

The exhibition also celebrates all that glass is – a magical, seductive material that can be formed into almost anything – including a fragile vessel created by slumping woven glass threads, a carpet – the winning exhibit – a beach towel hung nonchalantly across a peg and a cheeky rabbit.

Canberra artists are well represented. Head of Glass Workshop and convenor of craft and design at the ANU School of Art, Associate Prof Richard Whiteley, has been a regular exhibitor in the Ranamok and is showing a dramatic and architectural cast glass work titled “-hale”.

Kirstie-Rea-Identity-the-swim-375x500Light flows through two voids in these elegant and sophisticated works that have a soft, feminine surface and are modelled on the interior bodily cavities. They are seemingly simple and highlight the virtuosity of this artist.

Kirstie Rea is exploring identity in “identity – the swim” – a towel that hangs over a shelf. It evokes memories of taking off wet bathers at the pool and continues the work that she has been pursuing of draping and folding.

This exhibition celebrates the major and significant contribution the prize has made to the development of an exhibiting culture for Australian and NZ glass.Lee-Howes-Phillumeny1-500x375
