Somnambulant Coe notices the lights of Northbourne

TEN days ago “CityNews” reported on the new lights being installed on Northbourne Avenue and noted that they were going in at the site of the proposed Capital Metro terminus.

So it’s pleasing to see the Liberals’ Alistair Coe dredging up that ancient history in the Legislative Assembly.

“The farce of the Capital Metro project continues with the ACT government spending $114,000 to install lights and cables at the site of a proposed light rail terminus on Northbourne Avenue which will have to be removed to make way for its construction,” Alistair said.

“The ACT government has awarded a contract for $114,478.32 to install footpath light poles at the site of the proposed light rail city terminus. At the same time, the government has contractors working along Northbourne investigating the removal of lights, poles, pipes and cables along the road.

“It’s ridiculous to have one arm of government working for light rail and another disregarding it. This latest blunder shows how comical this whole light rail project has become.

“Obviously the government is doubtful about the project going ahead if they’re installing infrastructure which would have to be removed in less than 12 months.

“The ACT government has already spent more than $25 million on light rail, and tragically, this squandered $114,000 is just more of the same from a bad government,” Mr Coe concluded.
