Woden Cemetery upgrades

SHANE Rattenbury has shown off the newly refurbished Woden Cemetery after over $200,000 in upgrades.

“Upgrades to Woden Cemetery have vastly improved the appearance of the facility and expanded its capacity to provide services to the community,” Shane said.

“The heritage listed building housing the waiting room and office has undergone extensive renovations to create a comfortable and functional place to discuss funeral arrangements with the cemetery’s facilitators.

“The new touch screen information kiosk provides an easy and convenient way for visitors to find information they need, including how to find the grave site they’re looking for and burial times and locations.

“The new babies’ rose garden was planned by integrating the heritage listed trees in its design. Two symmetrically aligned stone wall gardens with paved walking paths provide a peaceful location for families to visit.

“An extension to the Mausoleum that will double its capacity has commenced, necessitated by the growing demand for the building. The mausoleum will now house new columbarium niche memorials for the placement of ashes.

“A storage shed extension is also underway to help cemetery caretakers keep the grounds manicured and presentable for when people come to visit their loved ones,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Established in 1936, the cemetery plays an important role in our city’s history and I’m pleased with the work that has been done to uphold its heritage. The upgrades will also enhance visitor experience with the essential services provided by the Woden Cemetery.”
