WESLEY Music Scholars have dominated the Canberra music scene for many years.

Names like mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby,  soprano Zara Barrett, tenor Christopher Steele, baritone Jeremy Tatchell, trumpeter Peter Miller, and guitarist Bradley Kunda come to mind and the list goes on – nearly 100 in all.

These educational scholarships, which have many scholars through school and university, have been awarded each year since 1994 to outstanding voice and instrumental students with potential who can benefit from opportunities to practise, perform and make recordings as a soloist or in ensemble in the spaces and facilities of the Wesley Music Centre and Wesley Uniting Church in Forrest. They are financed by the Wesley Uniting Church and Wesley Music Foundation.

Applications from singers of all voice types and instrumentalists are encouraged. Known vacancies for music performance scholarships in 2014 include those for sopranos, a tenor, a violinist and a woodwind player.

As well, a scholarship or scholarships will also be offered to students at secondary or tertiary level who are interested in gaining skills and experience in sound and video recordings and production in the field of classical music.

Wesley Music Scholars play an important role in the active musical life of the Music Ministry of Wesley Uniting Church, especially in relation to Sunday services at 10.30am, under the leadership of Dr. Calvin Bowman, director of music for  the church.

Scholars also have opportunities to practise and to perform in the Wesley Music Centre for autumn and spring Scholars’ concerts and also to participate in Wednesday Lunchtime Live concerts or other concerts from time to time and special events.

All scholarship holders can expect supportive environment as well as financial assistance towards student fees, travel or other education expenses.

Full-time tertiary students (music and non-music majors), high school and college students and other young people with appropriate skills, potential and interest in music performance, are encouraged to apply.

The nature and value of the scholarships will be determined in the light of the background and potential of successful applicants and the available funding.

The application form may be downloaded from www.wesleycanberra.org.au

Completed forms should be forwarded by email to Alan Hicks at alchna@grapevine.com.au  at any time up to 5pm on Monday, March 3. Inquiries can also be made to Dr Bowman at calvin.bowman@aya.yale.edu or 0430 905 807.
