Bunda St shareway in the running for a national award

SHANE Rattenbury informs us the Bunda Street Shareway project is a finalist in the 2015 Planning Institute of Australia National Awards for Planning Excellence.

“GTA Consultants and McGregor Coxall as well as Roads ACT in the ACT Government were recognised for the project’s innovative design in December 2014 when they were announced an ACT finalist,” Shane said.

“The Bunda Street Shareway will now vie for the national ‘Hard Won Victory’ Award which recognises planning initiatives that have developed innovative planning solutions.

“This nomination is great recognition for the Bunda Street shareway project which is designed to increase the vitality of the area and encourage pedestrian and cyclist activity.

“The final design for the shareway was chosen following a design competition held in 2013 which went out to the community and stakeholders for consultation. The ACT Government wanted the Bunda Street section of the Civic Cycle Loop, with its large number of retailers and high pedestrian activity, to be something unique.

“The national awards will be announced on Wednesday 13 May which will come just after the Bunda Street festival on Sunday 10 May.

“The festival will celebrate the completion of the Bunda Street Shareway and will be a great way to spend Mother’s Day with a range of entertainment for the family. This will include music, gigantic family games, a drawing tent, DIY chalk art on the shareway, bike maintenance demonstrations and a bike rodeo as well as tasting plates from local restaurants and a pampering zone for mums.

“It is also a great opportunity for people to familiarise themselves with the shareway given it is a fairly new concept for most Canberrans.

“Motorists and cyclists must give way to pedestrians on the shareway. For cars, this means slowing down or coming to a stop to avoid a collision. All road users will need to be mindful of one another as cyclists and pedestrians are able to cross the road at any point.

“The shareway is just one way the ACT Government is creating an environment which makes healthy lifestyle choices easier and encourages greater use of sustainable transport,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

Really? The Planning Institute of Australia obviously hasn’t tried to use the “share” way as a pedestrian or a driver. It is confusing and therefore dangerous.
