$20,000 NSW funding again for CATS

CORALIE Wood and the team at the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Awards are over the moon at news of another $20,000 from the New South Wales State Government to help with their 2016 night of nights, but are far less impressed with the ACT Government, which they say has consistently sidelined the popular celebration of amateur theatre in the region.

The NSW Government has now confirmed $20,000 to support the ongoing efforts of the CATS, with Minister for Regional Development and Member for Monaro John Barilaro describing the Awards as “integral to the arts community in the Monaro”.

“The Canberra Theatre Awards have been running for 20 years and support local theatre groups across southern NSW and the ACT,” Barilaro said, adding, “These awards help to raise the profile of our considerable regional theatrical talent. Last year 21 of the 44 winners were from NSW theatre companies,” he said.

Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant, said he was pleased the NSW Government was supporting amateur theatre in regional areas.

“The Awards have grown over the years to become a major event on the ACT/Southern NSW theatre calendar and are a boost to the regional arts in NSW which enrich the lives of so many”, the minister said.
