6,500 new homes to the west of Holt

Mick Gentleman

MICK Gentleman has tabled the approved Territory Plan Variation which will deliver 6,500 homes in the ACT, over the next 20-30 years, west of Macgregor and Holt.

He says it will reconnect Canberrans to the Murrumbidgee River.

Mick said the suburb will become a community hub with unique environmental and heritage characteristics in West Belconnen.

“It has also been really exciting to see how much has been invested in bringing the community along in this development,” Mick said.

“The community has had its say and the developer has listened. As excitement for this new venture has grown, more than 2500 community members have visited the development’s shopfront at Kippax, providing the community a direct say in how this new community will be built.

“This engagement model, which ensures the community has a direct say in shaping future developments, especially one as exciting as the West Belconnen development, really has been a model for how planning and development should be done in this growing city.

“It is this approach which has factored into my decision to approve the variation and so the developer can get on with the job of building the future of Belconnen.

“The variation will ensure there are a range of housing options in West Belconnen, including increased opportunities for affordable housing, Schools, commercial centres, open space and employment opportunities will also be provided.

“The proposed development builds on the government’s commitment to create local neighbourhoods with an emphasis on walking and cycling to local facilities and more outdoor recreation areas.”

Public consultation for TPV351 was held concurrently with National Capital Authority consultation for Draft Amendment 85 to the National Capital Plan which would amend broad land uses to expand the Urban Area of Belconnen to the ACT/NSW border and redefine the Murrumbidgee River corridor.
