A chess expo hits Garema Place tomorrow

THE ACT Chess Association (ACTCA) is holding a chess expo in Garema Place tomorrow, 11am to 2pm.

“Canberra has a rich chess culture and it one of the strongest cities in the country. It is estimated that there are over 605 million adults who play chess regularly round the world,” said Cam Cunningham, ACTCA President.

“We hope to attract members of the public who enjoy a game with friends or used to play as a child and introduce them to Canberra chess clubs.

“The Doeberl Cup, Australia’s most prestigious chess tournament, kicks off in Canberra on Thursday. Several Grandmasters and strong players from overseas will be competing against a strong Australian field.

“Members of the public are invited to try out their talents in social games and test their wits over a giant chess set. They can pit their skills against some of the strong players who are participating in the Doeberl Cup, or just ask for advice about strategies.

The ACTCA will also provide information about local clubs and chess opportunities in the Canberra area.

“Chess is an exciting activity which has many associated benefits. We hope to share our love for this game and have some fun in the process,” said Alana Chibnall, from the ACT Junior Chess League.

ANU Chess Club will be running a special lightning (each player has five minutes on their clock) chess tournament on Wednesday night from 6.45pm at the Asian Studies building. Entry is free and open to all members of the public.
