A review of the ACT’s rates concessions

andrew barr

ANDREW Barr has kicked off consultation on a review of the ACT’s Concessions Program.

“We must ensure our concessions system is financially sustainable in the long-term, while providing the best support for those most in need,” Andrew said.

“Making sure vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community have access to concessions for transport and basic services is a key pillar in our government’s agenda, and this won’t change in this review. We have previously identified this review as part of a broader strategy to build an effective and sustainable economy for the ACT.

“The review follows sustained growth in the cost of the ACT Concessions Program of around 9 per cent per annum over the past five years, and additional funding for the current year of $6.6 million needing to be allocated in the 2014?15 Budget to meet expected increases in the cost of the program.

“The Review will advise on the future funding requirements for the program and different funding options for consideration in the 2015-16 Budget.”

Community views are being sought on what concessions are the most important, if levels of assistance and eligibility requirements are appropriate and target those most in need, and what opportunities there are to reduce current and future pressure on the program.

Public consultation on the Concessions Review has commenced and will finish on Friday 10 April 2015.
