ActewAGL trialling home batteries

THE TURNER family from the suburb of Forde will be the first in the ACT to trial home battery storage as part of a collaboration between local energy company ActewAGL and electronics giant Panasonic.

ActewAGL CEO Michael Costello said the launch of the first home battery trial today in the ACT comes after ActewAGL and Panasonic announced their partnership in June.

“ActewAGL prides itself on being a progressive organisation with a keen eye on solutions that help our customers manage their energy use,” Michael said.

“We believe battery storage could be such a solution, so naturally we are eager to see this trial commence.

“The trial will give us the opportunity to see how the batteries operate within our electricity network and seek customer feedback on the technology.

“While the grid will still play an important role in the supply of electricity, we believe the battery storage industry will continue to grow over the next few years as the technology continues to advance. Battery storage is the future ‘no-brainer’ companion for renewable energy systems and like the PV solar industry in the mid-2000s; it will quickly become more affordable and available for customers.

“In addition we know that the ACT community has a high awareness of climate change, and the introduction of battery storage will increasingly have a positive impact on the ACT’s renewable energy targets.”

Panasonic Australia’s Managing Director Paul Reid said “Our residential battery combined with ActewAGL’s solar product will extend the energy solutions for customers and help them to maximise the self-consumption of electricity generated from their solar.

“This technology has been designed specifically for Australia’s unique conditions, and we look forward to seeing the benefits realised locally through this trial.

“Panasonic’s 80 years of global battery innovation takes in 40 years of expertise in Lithium-ion technology. With this heritage we are able to deliver industry leading reliability, quality and safety.”

ActewAGL encourages its customers to contact them if they’re interested in participating in the trial.
