Hosted by the Canberra Grammar School, the choir will treat Canberra residents will be to a unique musical experience this Friday during its second Australian tour in Canberra.

Eighteen representatives of the choir, comprised of orphaned and vulnerable children from the disadvantaged Kampala and Luwero areas of Uganda, will be conducting concerts and workshops with the local community and CGS.

Their vibrancy, outstanding musical and dancing abilities have captured the world’s imagination and every year since the choir has toured North America and Europe to raise money for children’s education.

They’ve stormed the stages of Carnegie Hall and the London Palladium performing for US Presidents and Nobel Prize winners alongside celebs like Will Smith, Bob Geldof, Alicia Keys and Annie Lennox.

“The purpose of the tour is to raise awareness of the orphaned and destitute children of Africa and to raise funds for the choir’s program, giving the children access to an education and chance to raise themselves out of poverty”, says Pip Cain, Head of Primary Arts and Languages at Canberra Grammar School.

“The children and event organisers are also being billeted by CGS staff and students during their time in Canberra, allowing them to really enjoy the local experiences”, he said.

Through the choir’s fundraising efforts over the past 30 year, 52,000 children have received a better education with choir members educated to university level and often returning to the community as lawyers and doctors.

After the events held in Canberra, the CGS Junior School Chorale and the CGS Singers will be traveling to Wollongong to sing with the African Children’s Choir, Gondawa Voices, Sydney Girls’ Choir and Kate Miller-Heidke in the Massed Choir Spectacular as part of the 1,000 voice choir.
