Anyone up for an ant walk?

ACT Parks and Conservation Service is encouraging members of the public to join local ant expert Ajay Narendra at the Mount Majura reserve to learn about the vital role ants play in the ACT.

“Ants play a leading role in the environment as predators and scavengers and they also have highly social organisation and amazing navigation skills,” Parks and Conservation Service Regional Manager, Stuart Jeffress, said.

“Ants are a fascinating creature to observe in the bush. They are the engine room of our environment, keeping natural systems ticking over. To glean an insight into their truly amazing world I’d encourage you to join our local ant expert on this great walk run by the Friends of Mount Majura.

“Children accompanied by adults are especially welcome. Bookings are essential. Bring a magnifying lens, wear sun protection and covered shoes. A gold coin donation to support the Friends conservation work would be most welcome.”

The Mount Majura ant walk will meet at Helms Place, off Rivett Street near corner of Richards Street on Sunday 1 March 2015. It will run from 4 pm to 5.30 pm. To find out more, go to www.majura.org, email secretary@majura.org or call 0408 429 214.
