CANBERRA Glassworks invites everyone  to celebrate its 8th birthday from 5pm – 8pm tomorrow Friday 1 May. There’ll be a FREE performance from 6pm – 7pm in the Hotshop where artist Sarah Humphrey’s cast glass violin and cello, ‘A Giocherellare’ will be played by musicians Emma Greenhill and Felix Hoffman-Este. Humphrey’s was winner of the 2014 National Student Art Glass prize and the performance has been scheduled to coincide with opening night of the Canberra International Music Festival. There will be an artist’s talk by  Jenni Kemarre Martiniello for the ‘ReInventing the Weave’ exhibition  this Saturday May 2 at 2pm, also at the Glassworks.

“COLOUR my world” is the first exhibition dedicated to the hand-coloured photograph since the 1970s: The exhibition at the NGA draws together engaging photographs by some of Australia’s most important contemporary artists, Micky Allan, Ruth Maddison, Warren Breninger, Julie Rrap, Janina Green, Christine Barry, Fiona Hall, Miriam Stannage, Robyn Stacey, Nici Cumpston, Lyndell Brown/Charles Green and Jon Cattapan. KOTARO Nagano, winner of the 2nd Australian International Chopin Piano Competition (Canberra 2014) will perform a piano recital for The Friends of Chopin Australia on the ANU School of Music’s 1847 Pleyel piano, Chopin’s favourite type of piano. THE next show at PhotoAccess is a large solo show by Canberra photographer Sean Davey encompassing all three spaces. “Port Moresby | Second Contact” comprises images made in Papua New Guinea over a ten year period. A regular visitor to PNG, Davey presents a deeply personal look at the country and he highlights his process as a photographer, presenting intimate contact prints (small photographs), sketchbooks and collaged images. 2015, he notes, is Papua New Guinea’s 40th anniversary year of independence. THERE’LL be a preview tonight of the coming art auction “Sunday Dreaming” today Thursday 30 April, from 6 – 7.30pm in the Foyer of The John Curtin School of Medical Research Building, 131 Garran Road, ANU Campus where Indigenous art expert Wally Caruana Professor Simon Easteal will describe the art and the work of The National Centre for Indigenous Genomics. ‘A TASTE for Travel’ is a collection of paintings from home and overseas by Canberra artist Val Johnson, to be opened at the Royal Art Society of NSW’s Lavender Bay Gallery 25-27 Walker St North Sydney by Michael Winters (artist, printmaker, Philhellene & teacher) this Saturday 2 May at 1.30pm. All welcome. Johnson’s involvement with the RAS goes back to the 60’s and she is also a member of the Canberra Arts Workshop and Art in Miniature Canberra.

THE annual Griffith Street Party hosted by M16 Artspace and the Griffith-Narrabundah Community Association will be held again at M16 Artspace, this Saturday 2 May from 12.00 to 3.30pm. It’s always a family friendly community event that combines art with food and jazz. On the day M16’s three gallery spaces will be open and 14 different tenant artists from M16 Artspace will open their studios to event goers. A sausage sizzle, Girl Guide cupcakes, a coffee stall with baked goods, a range of arts and crafts and other goodies and displays are expected to contribute to the traditional ‘village fair’ atmosphere. The original poster artwork by ‘Byrd’, will also be raffled and the proposed design for the new Blaxland Park will be on display, as well as diagrams of the ACT government’s proposals to re-develop the Stuart Flats and Gowrie Court. 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith.


THE Drill Hall Gallery at Kingsley Street, Acton, open 12 – 5pm Wednesday to Sunday, is a hive of activity. It’s currently exhibiting the works of 13 artists who were part of the Sydney gallerist Robert Linnegar’s ambitious project where groups of artists from Australia and New Zealand to revisit the legendary sites of the Anzac expedition to Gallipoli.
