Bridge strengthening to bring more mega trucks into the city

Mick-Gentleman

MICK Gentleman says works will occur throughout June to strengthen four bridges on the Monaro Highway and Fairbairn Avenue.

“The upgrade of bridges on the Monaro Highway and Fairbairn Avenue will improve the local and national freight route,” Mick said.

“Acclaim Contractors Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to strengthen two bridges on the northbound and southbound carriageway of the Monaro Highway between Jerrabomberra Avenue and Narrabundah Lane. The bridge between Lanyon Drive and David Warren Road on the Monaro Highway will also receive strengthening works by Acclaim Contractors.

“The bridge over Woolshed Creek between Morshead Drive and Majura Road on Fairbairn Avenue will also be strengthened. These works will be undertaken by Guideline (ACT) Pty Ltd.

“These bridges are on the B-double network, and by increasing their load capacity the next generation of higher productivity vehicles will be catered for and will have access to these two important roads without restriction.

“$800,000 was provided in the 2014-15 ACT Budget for bridge strengthening works. This was matched by funding provided by the Federal Government, totalling $1.6 million to undertake the 2014-15 bridge strengthening program.

“The 2015-16 ACT Budget also provided funding for bridge strengthening works, with $700,000 committed to ensure the continued efficient movement of heavy vehicles along the Monaro Highway, from Pialligo Avenue to Isabella Drive. The ACT funding matches funding provided in the 2015-16 Federal Budget under the Bridges Renewal Program,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
