ACT Policing’s latest quarterly crime statistics show a 2.3 per cent decline in crime reports in Canberra when compared to the same quarter last year.

The release of the July to September 2015 quarterly crime statistics show Canberra’s North experienced the steepest decline with crime reports in Inner North down 10.1 per cent, Gungahlin down 1.6 per cent and the Belconnen down 1.5 per cent.

Reports decreased in Tuggeranong (down 9.7 per cent) and Woden (down 7.6 per cent) while there was an increase in the Inner South (up 28.9 per cent) and Weston Creek (up 7 per cent). The emerging Molonglo district saw an increase from 23 reports to 63 reports; a trend which is expected to continue as the area populates.

ACT Policing Officer In Charge Ministerial, Policy and Performance Station Sergeant Craig McPherson was pleased that crime reports decreased overall.

“ACT Policing is committed to ensuring that Canberra remains the safest capital city in Australia,” Station Sergeant McPherson said.

“While we can do our part through enforcement, the support of the community is essential to reducing crime. The community plays a significant role by reporting crime to police, by reporting suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers and by taking security measures to protect their property.”

“In particular, we’d like to thank the community for their support of our Facebook and Twitter pages. The community continues to assist police in identifying offenders from CCTV images or footage, reporting information to Crime Stoppers and helping to spread crime prevention and safety messages,” Station Sergeant McPherson said.
