Chemicals investigated at the Nishi building

ACT Fire & Rescue is currently on scene at the Nishi building, Edinburgh Ave, City investigating unknown chemicals on the basement level.

Chemicals in the car park basement level are believed to be possibly hydrochloric acid and asbestos.

The acid is sealed and contained in drums and the situation is under control.

No evacuations at this stage.

The area has been deemed safe and ACT Fire & Rescue is about to depart the scene.

The chemicals have been indentified to be hydrochloric acid with the other material, believed to be asbestos, still being investigated.

A private contractor will remove the chemicals and material from the area.
