Christmas in the City sets records

CANBERRA made history with the SIDS & Kids ACT Christmas Lights in the City breaking the Guinness world record title for the most number of lights on an artificial Christmas tree on Friday night.

Canberra CBD Limited CEO Jane Easthope is thrilled with the record breaking start to “Christmas in the City – Canberra Celebrates!”

“On behalf of Canberra CBD Limited I’d like to congratulate SIDS & Kids ACT, the Richards Family and everyone who participated in this record breaking achievement,” Jane said.

:We’re extremely proud of everyone who put in efforts towards the success of this year’s display.

“This tremendous feat has well and truly put Canberra on the map. Not only does it help to raise funds and awareness for a great cause but also contributes to the economics and tourism for Canberra.

With 518,838 lights the Canberra Christmas tree and lights tunnel brought a magical presence to the Christmas in the City opening night festivities including the Christmas concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

Also launching across the popular opening weekend was Taste Canberra, the Christmas Night Markets, Santa Claus Lane Day Markets and the Asthma Foundation ACT’s Children’s Activity Hub.

“It was great to see the City come alive with visitors across the weekend, both day and night. The markets are a great addition to the City’s festivities with an array of Christmas themed gifts as well as hot food, dessert, wine and boutique beer at Taste Canberra.

“The University of Canberra’s Pavilion X, the awards by the Chief Minister for school students suggestions for Garema Place, the GWS Giants, and the Green Sheds free gelato and jumping castle all enticed more people to come into the City and shop, dine and participate, many whom wouldn’t ordinarily come into the older part of the CBD.”

On Friday 11 December, the 12 days of Christmas celebrations will pop up in the City including Christmas camels, a petting farm with cuddly animals, Health Hub and more.

Canberra celebrates with activities for all ages, surrounded by the best shopping, dining and entertainment in the Capital Region with many venues are open until late.
