Coda Conduct paints it gold

CANBERRA’S favourite girl hip-hop duo, Erica Mallett and Sally Coleman of Coda Conduct, are at it again, with a brand new track called “Paint It Gold.”

It’s the first release from the pair since their debut EP, “Butter Side Up”, in March. That saw Coda Conduct quickly gain attention, appearing on Triple J Breakfast, being chosen as Triple J Unearthed Feature Artist, playing Groovin’ the Moo in Canberra, and receiving airplay across the country.

Now, with chimes, claves and a ‘funk-ridden’ bassline, this is pitched as a smoother, more melodic sound.

“It’s different to anything we’ve done before,” says Mallett, “but we like keeping people on their toes! ‘Butter Side Up’ had lots of ‘look, I can rap!’ moments – with ‘Paint It Gold’ we wanted to focus on writing a cohesive song, and have fun with the delivery.”

Coleman elaborates, “I guess when I make our beats it becomes a more collaborative process…We’ll start writing lyrics to a basic loop and the beat grows out of those vocals – in this case it meant we had a lot more fun playing with melodies and harmonies.”

Production was by Simon Cohen of 301 Studios, who has worked with artists like Tuka, Horrorshow and Illy.
