A courageous Gentleman asks the public for their thoughts on Holt and Weston traffic management

Mick Gentleman

MICK Gentleman has invited the Canberra community to provide feedback on the effectiveness of two traffic management schemes implemented in mid-2014 in Belconnen and Weston Creek.

“Following traffic studies in Holt, Chapman, Rivett and Stirling in 2012-13, which involved the technical analysis of traffic data as well as community feedback, traffic management measures have been installed to mitigate concerns regarding speeding and rat running. These measures introduced were deemed the highest priority,” Mick said.

“The Holt traffic management scheme focused on Beaurepaire Crescent, Messenger Street, Trickett Street and Spofforth Street.

“Seven of Spofforth Street’s eleven speed cushions were removed and replaced with two chicanes to help reduce speeds and enhance road safety along this residential street by providing continuous speed control all day, every day.

“Beaurepaire Crescent, Messenger Street and Trickett Street all received line marking and kerb extensions along their entire lengths to visually narrow the roads. Beaurepaire Crescent also had two chicanes with pedestrian facilities installed, while Messenger and Trickett streets each received one set of speed cushions.

“As part of the Chapman, Rivett and Stirling traffic management scheme, line marking was implemented on Streeton Drive from Hindmarsh Drive to the roundabout at Darwinia Terrace and between Namatjira Drive and Fremantle Drive. Streeton Drive also received a right turn lane at Sherratt Place and two pedestrian refuge islands.

“Two islands on Bunbury Street, an island on Darwinia Terrace and modifications to the Darwinia Terrace approach to the roundabout at Streeton Drive completed the works.

“Evaluations of the effectiveness of both these traffic management schemes are currently underway. Community consultation is a key component of the evaluations. Improvements to the treatments and the implementation of further treatments will depend on the results of these evaluations.”

Minister Gentleman said surveys will be delivered to households in Holt, Macgregor, Chapman, Stirling and Rivett. The surveys will also be available online at timetotalk.act.gov.au and at the Belconnen, Holt and Woden public library branches. Consultation closes 5 pm 16 March 2015.

Also in Weston Creek, Namatjira Drive was identified as having the highest speeding, highest accident rate and highest traffic volumes of any street in Weston Creek. Some kerb extensions/bike lanes have been added to Namatjira Drive, but strangely this unsafe street has been excluded from the streets residents are asked to comment on!
