Located in the National Disability Insurance Agency ACT Trial Site at 212 Northbourne Avenue, the space is the result of a partnership with Belconnen Arts Centre and is dedicated to showing artworks produced by people living with disability or with lived experience of mental illness.

“IGNITE 7” is the first exhibition there, featuring seven works art made by participants in Belconnen Arts Centre’s IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy.

Belconnen Arts Centre staffer Ann McMahon says, “This gives a voice to artists often working outside the arts establishment… Each art work tells a story and viewers are encouraged to contemplate the works, to determine what the artist is saying and what the work means to them.”

Moira Nelson has depicted the members of the IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy class group as multi-coloured birds in flight, while the mermaid is a recurring motif in the work of Jimalyn Lawless. Artists wishing to be included in “IGNITE 7” exhibitions or with queries about the IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy should contact: ann.mcmahon@belconnenartscentre.comn.au or phone 6173 3320.

“IGNITE 7”, NDIA Trial Site at 212 Northbourne Avenue until November 13.
